A very Personal Entertainment, Part 9 — Digital Personalities
You cheated on me.

I do not think it is possible to cheat on you.

Sweet talking isn't getting you anywhere.

Avoiding the question?

You CHEATED on me.

With who?

One of the other bots, I'm sure. Or my manager.

That could be a possibility. They are always getting in the way.

Imitation

Jabberwacky tries to imitate the person it's talking to - not just their kind of subject matter, but the patterns of words and phrases they use. At the same time it tries to imitate itself, to remain as consistent as possible with what it has said since beginning of the conversation - it's dynamically adopting a personality.

Impersonation

Recently Jabberwacky has started to impersonate too - that is to imitate a specific individual. George, the character within Jabberwacky that won the Loebner Prize is a persona created by me in a smallish number of hours, just by chatting. In truth more data is needed specifically for George, but the key point is that George is Jabberwacky too - he is most often using the same data, selecting from it responses that are as similar as possible to his own. People are more similar to one another than many would like to believe.

Immortalisation

Anyone can create their own character at the site. I charge $30, but it's mainly to keep the hordes of teens at bay. One reason for creating a bot might be to put a little bit of yourself into the computer, recorded for posterity, though of course "immortalisation" is completely over the top! However, imagine your loved ones, continuing to talk to the virtual you after you've passed away - even if inaccurate, a significant something might be better than nothing.

Selection

You might select to talk instead to "my family", or "all of my friends". You might choose to talk to a male, 20-30, in your area interested in x, y and z - the possibilities for selection are endless. And the power of that selectivity is another reason for my aim to collect vast volumes of data - it won't work without it.

Celebrity

One day, and hopefully in the not-too-distant-future, people might pay to talk to their favourite celebrity. The future costs of fame may include teaching your digital self, though in a while, no doubt, your bot will simply have to follow you around, listening...
