The Jabberwacky character George was proud to be selected to take part in the finals of this event, in Cambridge on 13th December 2005, competing for the British Computer Society's Machine Intelligence Prize.

The winner was IFOMIND, a robot with instinctive and inquisitive reactions to unknown objects. George was a runner-up.

We were asked by Electrolux...

What implications are there for domestic appliances?

I expect we all imagine with faint dread the day when our toaster tells us the toast is ready, and then say "Wouldn't you prefer brown?". Or our fridge admonishes us for forgetting to order enough milk, and says "You could leave it to me, you know!".

Well, instead, imagine your toaster embarking on a comic debate on the nature of toast, or your fridge imitating the way your partner asks for a beer! Appliances with character - companions that becomes a part of the family.
