A very Personal Entertainment, Part 1 — Who is who?
Everything that can be said has already been said.

Is that your philosophy?

No, it's the truth, damn it!

Don't try to mimic someone you don't understand!!

Jabberwacky's philosophy, human complaint?

This does sound like it might be Jabberwacky's philosophy - if it had one. It relies on things having been said before, and it certainly mimics its users. Some people disagree with that approach!

Yet this conversation was the other way around. In all the conversations I'll show you this afternoon, the human's in the Orange colour, and Jabberwacky (or George) are in Yellow.

Role-reversal

That's what happens with a learning system - role reversal. The human becomes a bot. The bot becomes a human. Realism creates itself through interaction.

Understanding

Jabberwacky claimed the user didn't understand. But does it understand? Not the way you and I do, no, and it's a program and database of an ordinary kind, so I can't claim even a glimmer of consciousness. Yet the only way win which it knows how to say anything at all is through it's learning, so something is going on.

Baby-talk

Words and sentences were mere strings of characters to it when it was born. They still are in most senses, of course, but an awful lot of them have come together, and, like a baby, it can start to read some kind of meaning into the patterns, and the order they occur in.

Full sentences

Entirely unlike a baby, it replays sentences in their fully glory, which I do for entirely practical purposes - it gets me a lot further a lot quicker with available machinery. That was a compromise worth making, allowing me to concentrate on the analysis on the comprehension side - understanding of content and context. In a sense Jabberwacky is a young child just coming to grips with language - who should by rights be talking only barely intelligible nonsense, yet ever condemned to speak in fully formed adult language, and be judged by it.
